What's Infant Formula? 

Infant formula is manufactured food designed and marketed for feeding to babies and infants less than 12 months of age, usually prepared for bottle-feeding. The composition of infant formula is designed to be roughly based on a human mother's milk at approximately one to three months postpartum, although there are significant differences in the nutrient content of these products. The most commonly used infant formulas contain purified cow's milk whey and casein as a protein source, a blend of vegetable oils as a fat source, lactose as a carbohydrate source, a vitamin-mineral mix, and other ingredients depending on the manufacturer. An upswing in breastfeeding in many countries has been accompanied by a deferment in the average age of introduction of baby foods (including cow's milk), resulting in both increased breastfeeding and increased use of infant formula between the ages of 3- and 12-months.

 

A 2001 World Health Organization (WHO) report found that infant formula prepared in accordance with applicable Codex Alimentarius standards was a safe complementary food and a suitable breast milk substitute.

Colostrum Product Categories

 

There  are three main product categories under the Biolife colostrum product range: pure colostrum powders, colostrum compound powders, and lastly colostrum tablets and capsules. So what are the differences among them?

 

Biolife's pure colostrum powders can be split into five levels corresponding to their IgG content. Pure colostrum powders contain IgG levels at 10%, 15%, 20%, 25% and 35% respectively, these products include Natrapure and  Peizhi/Healtheries pure colostrum powders (avaiable in China for over a decade). We are currently launching a  new range of colostrum powder – Keymore  Bovine Pure Colostrum Powder. 

              

Colostrum compound powder is again categorised according to its IgG content at 0.5%, 3%, and 10% IgG. The 0.5% category was the initial colostrum powder to receive the “imported colostrum product safety certificate in China. In the Chinese market, Peizhi/Healtheries gold compound powder and Natrapure gold compound powder have been sold and well accpeted by consumers for over 10 years, these products have a 3% IgG content and are the mainstream colostrum product on the market. At IgG levels of 3%, this is equivalent to 90g of the new Keymore colostrum powder, especially formulated with prebiotics (GOS) for the delicate digestive systems of young children.
                       
Last but not least, Biolife colostrum tablets and capsules are made in accordance with the IgG levels of Biolife’s pure colostrum powder and compound powders. Colostrum  capsules have been sold in the Chinese market for many years with Peizhi/Healtheries compound tablets and Natrapure colostrum tables as the mainstream products. In the 24 Chinese accepted and approved health function categories, Natrapure colostrum tablets successfully obtained the second imported colostrum product certificate with an “immunomodulatory function” certification.

 

So how do we select the most suitable colostrum product from so many categories?

There are three main forms of colostrum products: pure colostrum powder, compound powders and tablets and capsules. Consumers can identify the most suited type according to their personal needs. Under the same colostrum type however, consumers need to be aware of the IgG content. The critical information and thus the value of every can/bottle/box of product is the total IgG content. Another point to note is that whether pure colostrum or compound colostrum, there is different packaging: full canning or partial canning [contains different numbers of small sachets at 1g, 2g, 2.5g, 5g, 10g, and 25g]. Partial canning have an additional packing step compared with full canning, this cause a higher packing cost thus, a higher overall product cost. Therefore consumers can choose the packaging type depending on individual preference.
